The assistance dog plays various roles.
It increases the independence of the person with reduced mobility by picking up fallen objects, by switching lights on and off, by fetching a ringing telephone, and by performing other services such as barking on command to attract attention.
It is also a companion, with whom outings are more fun, who makes it easier to get into contact with non-handicapped people.
Perhaps most important of all, the dog is a friend with whom one can confide, and one who does not judge by physical appearances.
